Reflection Blog on Unit 2

During this unit we learned about what happened to slaves when they made it to the Americans and into the Civil War and during the time of the Civil War and what followed. To start, up until the civil war slaves were treated very harshly. They didn't meet the new world with open arms or a good life. African American slaves were treated with abuse and neglect. They had no rights and most children were ripped from their families. Leading up to the Civil War the southern states were treating their slaves very harshly, whilst the northern states had some leniency and believed that they should have some form of freedom, granted they didn't think this way for long, but they did. When laws were brought about to give them some protection the northern and southern states beliefs went against each other bringing about the civil war.

During the time of the civil war, the slaves were finding ways to escape what was happening to them. They invented the underground railroad. This "railroad" consisted of many safe houses lined throughout the south who were able to hide and move the slaves from their safe house to the next. When a slave would arrive to them, they would feed them and shelter them until they were sure it was safe to move them. Anyone who was found to be a part of this "railroad" was considered an enemy of the confederacy and they were usually killed. Once the slave made it into a union state where the last safe houses were, they were shown a new way to live and usually they were helped with finding some way to help them lived their newfound freedom.

However the freedom wasn't long lasted. They union still had something prohibited and their "freedom" was limited. African Americans in the north weren't allowed to vote, they weren't allowed to own property, they weren't allowed an education, and they weren't allowed certain jobs meaning they didn't make much money. Most were still slaves, but paid and considered "maids".

Also, during the civil war, the southern states found it easier to put African Americans on the front lines during battles. This caused more aggression between the Confederacy and Union as they were putting those they didn't care about on the front lines. They were killing off the people they wanted to keep as captives. This time was really harsh on both sides of the line that split American and it caused a lot of strain on the states.
