Reflections on Unit 4

For the final unit we learned about the civil rights movement and post civil rights. We learned about what "ordinary people" did and the changed they helped make in their own everyday life. We learned the true meaning of what was behind the change in our laws and how that affected everybody throughout the country. For better, the civil rights movement made a huge impact on our society and the way we're seen today. We also learned about post civil rights time and how it's affected us today and the problems that are still faced in our society. During the civil rights period our country faced a great divide. In this time period we had many African American leaders fighting for their races rights and what they deserved as humans. The outcome of the civil rights movement gave African Americans the rights of other Americans. It gave them equality. It took many "ordinary people" doing extraordinary things. The African American community came together in Unions an

In this unit we learned about the later era of time with the African American community. As a whole it was based on their leaders and their place in the community. I learned about some of the greatest truths spoken by African American leaders and how their views shaped the future of our society. The teachings and the power behind these leaders was immense and without their perseverance, I don't believe their rights would have come until much later. I believe the greatest influence came from W.E.B. Dubois and his writing on the Talented Tenth. He believed that one in every ten African Americans, there would be one leader to power through. He believed that his people could do great things and they deserved and education and a standing in our society and the future of our country. He was right. During this unit we learned about what happened to slaves when they made it to the Americans and into the Civil War and during the time of the Civil War and what followed. To start, up until the civil war slaves were treated very harshly. They didn't meet the new world with open arms or a good life. African American slaves were treated with abuse and neglect. They had no rights and most children were ripped from their families. Leading up to the Civil War the southern states were treating their slaves very harshly, whilst the northern states had some leniency and believed that they should have some form of freedom, granted they didn't think this way for long, but they did. When laws were brought about to give them some protection the northern and southern states beliefs went against each other bringing about the civil war. During the time of the civil war, the slaves were finding ways to escape what was happening to them. They invented the underground railroad. This "rai

To start, we learned about the slave trade. We learned how it began and how it continued throughout time. It started with the Europeans, continued in with the people of West Africa, and continued in the New World. These slaves weren't just of one decent, but most of the slaves did come from the West Africa region. They were made to endue the Middle Passage, also known as "The Triangular Trade", which was a time where they were beaten into submission, forced to make a journey to the coast, all while watching their own people and other tribes be murdered for not submitting to those who have taken them, and then forced onto this ship to be taken. These people endured harsh conditions and most didn't make it to the new world, but those who did endured a life of harsh treatment, punishment, and were made to throw away their own cultures. We also learned the differences in the conditions for slaves from one area to another. The slaves in Africa and some in Europe were t
